Sclerotherapy Q & A

Which vein conditions are treated with sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins:

  • Spider Veins: Spider veins develop when tiny blood vessels dilate or enlarge. Since these blood vessels are close to your skin’s surface, they become visible as red, purple, or blue lines that look like a spider’s web. While spider veins can appear anywhere on your body, they commonly appear on your face and legs. Spider veins affect your appearance and may cause itching; otherwise, they don’t usually cause medical problems.
  • Varicose Veins: Varicose veins form in your legs where veins work against gravity to send blood back to your heart. Blood can flow backward when muscles in vein walls or valves inside the veins weaken. As blood flows in the wrong direction, it accumulates and causes enlarged and gnarled varicose veins.

What symptoms are caused by varicose veins?

You may not develop symptoms from varicose veins, but they can sometimes cause pain, cramping, swelling, and heavy-feeling legs. Varicose veins can also cause health complications such as:

  • Sores or ulcers that are painful and hard to heal
  • Bleeding that can be extensive if you have an injury
  • Blood clots that are just below the skin or deeper in the vein

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy treats varicose and spider veins by injecting a medicated solution directly into the affected blood vessels. The medication in the solution makes the veins collapse and seal shut; then your body absorbs the damaged veins.

Varicose and spider veins at the skin’s surface are easily injected. If your varicose veins are deep, Dr. Chung may perform ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. A foam version of the solution may be used for larger veins because the foam covers a larger area.

When will you see results?

Spider veins and small varicose veins disappear in about three to six weeks. It takes your body three to four months to clear away larger veins. Some patients need several treatments to achieve the results they want.

When veins respond to treatment, the results are permanent. New spider or varicose veins may develop in the future, however. Dr. Chung can recommend compression stockings or lifestyle changes to lower your risk of developing varicose or spider veins.
