Lasers can selectively target hair follicles by operating at a wavelength that only affects pigments in the follicle.
The laser safely passes through your skin without causing harm, while hair follicles absorb the laser. As laser energy is absorbed, the follicle is damaged so it no longer grows hair.
Each hair follicle on your body goes through a three-phase growth cycle. They grow hair for about two to seven years, then the active growth phase ends, and there’s a brief transitional stage before the follicles enter a resting phase.
Hairs loosen and fall out during the resting phase. After about three months of rest, the follicles begin another growth phase, and you get new hair.
Hair follicles operate independently. On any given day, 10-15% of your total follicles are in the resting phase. Some may have just entered the resting phase, while others are about to cycle back into active growth.
Hair follicle growth cycles are the reason you need multiple laser hair removal treatments. The laser is only effective when the follicle is in a growth phase. As a result, most people need four to seven treatments spaced about six to eight weeks apart to catch all of their hair follicles while they’re growing.
Dr. Chung uses the Excel HR™ for laser hair removal. This advanced medical device uses contact cooling to make the procedure comfortable. Each person’s sensitivity is different, however, so Dr. Chung may apply a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort.
Laser hair removal sessions last between five and 20 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Any residual effects are so minor that you don’t need downtime; you can return to your daily routine.
Your skin may be slightly red for a few days after laser treatment, but you can immediately apply makeup to cover the redness. Dr. Chung also recommends avoiding sun exposure for at least one week after laser hair removal.
Please call Dr. Chung to schedule a complimentary consultation or book an appointment online to take your first step toward permanent hair removal.
